Meditation is easier than you think

All you need is a quiet space or some headphones

To feel our best as we age, it is important to not only care for our physical health but also our mental well being. There are many things that we can do to help us feel our best emotionally,  developing and nurturing connections with family and friends, regular exercise, mindfulness in our daily activities and also setting aside some time for ourselves to practice meditation. Meditation is something anyone can do and regular practice has been shown to improve our overall mental wellbeing, promote better quality of sleep, reduce anxiety levels and improve cognitive function.

Contrary to popular belief, meditation doesn’t have to mean sitting cross-legged on the floor whilst chanting the all too familiar “Ommmm”. You can meditate anywhere and at any time of the day. You can meditate in the privacy of your home or you can join a class and enjoy a more guided experience.

Tips for getting started

  • Find a comfortable spot, your favourite chair or even lying down. If sitting, place your feet flat on the floor and your arms by your sides or in your lap. If lying down, place a pillow under your knees if needed and rest your arms by your sides.
  • Try to pick a time where you will be undisturbed, setting aside even just 10 minutes in an otherwise busy day can make all the difference.
  • Close your eyes and focus on slowing your breath, try to breathe using your diaphragm rather than your chest by noticing the rise and fall of your belly.
  • Notice any physical sensations that you feel in your body. Acknowledge any thoughts that come into your mind then gently let them go. This does take a little practice but becomes easier with time. Continue to gently focus on your breath.
  • End your session by taking a little time to give thanks for anything in your life that you’re grateful for, practising daily gratitude is just another way to promote a happier and healthier mind.

Anyone can benefit from a daily meditation practice, give it a try and start feeling the benefits for yourself!
